52 rows · Sep 19,  · The album that marked the beginning and the end for OMD. "Dazzle Ships" retrospectively continues to enjoy deserved rave reviews - according to the band it was a commercial suicide but taking away the "commercial" tag that´s foisted on many in the world of (pop) music to the present day, "Dazzle Ships" remains a classic masterpiece, nevermind the pop chart bollocks /5().

A very different perspective than the reviews I've read here is that Junk Culture is OMD's peak! This release very successfully blends the 'art' with the 'pop'. The previous release, Dazzle Ships, doesn't have hooks to demand the listener play the album over and over, while the next release, Crush, is contaminated by the peppering of crassly calculated careerist "hit singles" (soulless Stephen /5(78).

With Dazzle Ships a relative commercial and critical failure compared to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark’s previous material (unfairly as it happens), the temptation has always been to view Junk Culture as an unashamed stab, prompted or otherwise by the people at Virgin, at mass success. In some sense this is peculiar, since the outfit had been incredibly successful with fairly left field.

OMD were never afraid to experiment, in fact it sometimes got in the way of a nice flowing album and created the odd filler. That wasn’t the case on Junk Culture. In between slower tracks Hard Day and White Trash comes a calypso effort with a bank of horns in the form of All Wrapped Up. Bizarrely it doesn’t sound out of place.
